Project: Office refurbishment, Islington
value: £1,300,000
Client: Derwent London
Status: Tender

Located in an established conservation area, and surrounded by terraces of Georgian town houses, this early twentieth century warehouse forms part of a cluster of office buildings owned by Derwent London, arranged around a central courtyard which has been the subject of a hard landscape overhaul. The architectural programme for this building has been informed by a unique appreciation of the hidden qualities of the building, which have been revealed through a painstaking process of peeling away surface layers of detritus built up over generations of occupation.

Key to the success of the scheme is in the careful handling of the new interventions so designed to embellish and enhance the exposed history of the building to form a harmonious whole. Thus the scheme is as much about what ‘isn't' done as what ‘is' done; an exercise in economy of effort and cost for the greatest impact
