Floating Cinema Barge Construction

The construction of a new working barge for the floating cinema nears completion.

Working in partnership with artists and filmakers Somewhere, the cinema will feature a new "Extra-Ordinary" programme of outdoor screenings, canal tours, workshops and events along the waterways of East London and beyond.

The new Floating Cinema is due for launch during the summer of 2013 and is supported by The Legacy List with corporate partner Bloomberg as part of Bloomberg East in partnership with the Canal & River Trust. The Floating Cinema is part of UP Projects' Portavillion programme of temporary pavillions and structures for London's public spaces.

Tybalds Estate Planning Consent

Proposals for a £20 million regeneration of the Tybalds Estate of Holborn, London, received consent at committee on 13 June 2013.

The scheme, for Camden Council and Tibbalds Planning & Urban Design, is intended to increase the amount of affordable family housing in the area. The existing estate sits between Theobalds Road and Great Ormond Street Hospital, and currently comprises 360 homes in nine residential blocks built in the 1950s and 1960s.

The proposal aims to reintegrate the estate with the Georgian terraces of the area, with new buildings as well as extensions to the existing brick and concrete blocks. It adds 93 new homes, 68 of which will be affordable, and 11 of which will be designed for residents using wheelchairs.

The project is the result of an extended collaboration with Avanti and MAE, with Camlins designing the public realm. The focal point is a new urban square, as well as courtyards and improvements to existing community spaces.

Shepherds Building Planning Submission

Duggan Morris Architects have submitted proposals for a new reception building and cafe to be added to a 150,000sqft building in Shepherds Bush. Commissioned by Helical Bar the proposal seeks to better define and identiy the central entrance to the building. The visual impression of the scheme is a composition of cubic volumes, each designed to address datums of the existing building and the new proposed functions within. Consent is expected in August 2013.

New London Awards 2013

Duggan Morris Architects have been shortlisted in 3 categories with 4 projects at the NLA Awards 2013. The New London Awards recognise the very best in architecture, planning and development in the capital. New and proposed projects across all sectors of the built environment are eligible and will be judged by an eminent international jury. The jury will be looking for schemes of the highest design quality that demonstrate a positive impact on their surroundings and make a wider contribution to life in the city.

Maudsley Learning Centre, Camberwell, has been shortlisted in the Education category. Brentford Lock West, a collaboration with Karakusevic Carson Architects and Riches Hawley Mikhail has been shortlisted in the Residential category. Whilst The Old Vinyl Factory and Tybalds Estate projects have both been shortlisted in the Masterplans & MIxed Use category. These two proejcts, for brown field sites, are the result of collaborative working methods with several leading practitioners including Studio Egret West, MAE, AHMM and Avanti.

Winning schemes will be announced on 11 July at NLA's Annual Lunch at The Guildhall and featured in the NLA galleries alongside all shortlisted schemes at The Building Centre and in a special publication. Follow the link to see the full shortlist.

Curtain Road - Nearing completion

Works are close to completion for a 16,000sqft. urban infill in the heart of Shoreditch, East London. The project retains a three storey brick building fronting onto Curtain Road, crowned by a 3 storey lightweight contemporary extension designed to complement the street morphology and embrace the changes in height and indents in the street pattern. The project places a dynamic, sculptural form into a gap between two adjoining Victorian warehouse buidlings.

The compositional strategy locates a series of large, flush bonded glass units into a textured facade of framed corrugated mesh panels, intended to heighten the sense of delicacy and poise in contrast to the lower levels of load bearing brick: a retained two strey facade of Georgian origin.

To the rear, a stepped arrangement of terraces and landscaping, tracks the maximum permissible envelope defined by the penetration of sunlight into a communal courtyard shared by both commercial and residential tenants.

The project is due for completion in July 2013, and is being procured through a JCT form of traditional contract, value £2.8M

Alfriston School - Site commencement

The new swimming pool extension at Alfriston School has commenced on site. The project will take 51 weeks to complete.

The main roof to the pool room will be constructed of prefabricated timber panels forming the clear span repetitious form.

The facility has been developed over 2 phases since 2008 to consolidate the schools sports department and has been funded by Sport England, the Department for Education and private fund raising.

Maudsley Learning - Nearing completion

Works are nearing completion for the construction of a new learning centre for mental health and wellbeing, on the site of the South London Maudsley Campus, Denmark Hill. Delivered through a bespoke partnering contract, the project creates over 15,000sqft of accommodation, arranged over four floors.

A defining feature of the project is a split section, where learning spaces are arranged on the half levels of a grand accommodation stair wrapping a full height atrium at the heart of the plan. This space acts as an animator with users able to pause, meet and exchange between classes. This energy of use, feeds the building, with a free flowing ground floor served by a public cafe, whilst break out spaces, information points and carefully choreographed art pieces radiate a sense of cultural immersion; learning for anyone, anywhere, at any time.

Externally, the complexity of the internal spaces is communicated subtly, with a exoskeleton of precast concrete fins and cornices, staggering across the elevation following the stepped arrangement of the floor plates. A simple rhythm of hand laid brick panels and flush bonded glass, continues a strict compositional programme on all sides. This grid, and the portrait format of openings and panels, references the context of predominantly Georgian town houses and grand terraces.

A launch event is programmed for June 2013, with the building opening to the public in autumn of the same year.

The Old Vinyl Factory - Planning consent

Formal planning consent was granted by the London Borough of Hillingdon for the redevelopment at The Old Vinyl Factory today, a 17-acre site in Hayes, Middlesex. Secured for joint venture partners Cathedral Group plc and Development Securities plc, the scheme proposes a radical £250m redevelopment of the site which pays homage to its important history. The project was masterplanned by Studio Egret West with Duggan Morris Associates and Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.

Television Centre - New commission

Duggan Morris Architects are working in partnership with Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (Masterplanners), Maccreanor Lavington, Gillespies, Gordon Ingram, Gerald Eve on a major urban regeneration scheme for the site of the infamous BBC Television Centre, Shepherds Bush.

The project, for Stanhope, aims to create over 1000 mixed tenure homes, alongside retained and revamped recording studios, offices, retail and restaurant units, as well as a fully comprehensive public realm strategy.

The overarching principle of the masterplan aims to retain several key buildings, and specifically those of the entrance sequence and forecourt, whilst new additions are designed to follow the curved morphology of the eponymous 'question mark' plan of the original designed by Norman and Dawbarn in 1960.

Duggan Morris Architects are working on proposals for a new residential building of appoximately 70 units, on the site of the current restaurant block. This scheme, designed to outline stage, investigates a number of possible iterations in response to a set of design codes and parameter plans defined through the collaboration. Once such version, places a highly articulated block defined by a series of stepped terraces creating a unique roof line. The resultant form dips to four storeys in parts, rising to eight in others in response to salient site conditions.

A planning application is due for submission in May 2013.

RACC - First phase

The first phase of a comprehensive site wide masterplan for the Richmond Adult Community Centre has been completed. The RACC occupies a substantial site on a prominent corner in Richmond, facing Twickenham Road, a busy dual carriageway.

The masterplan proposes a complex programme of revealing through the actions of splicing and cutting to pave way for a series of new building structures to house and extend the arts and crafts curriculum. Conceptually, three large cubic forms cluster along the Twickenham Road boundary, creating a varied roof life. These cubes are expressed as simple brick volumes, topped with delicate lanterns of folded mesh and flush glazing.

The first phase, creates an enhanced therapies wing, with treatment rooms and spaces for a range of holistic treatments. A simple palette of polished steel and panels of unbroken white, are articulated with softly textured curtains which allow for a range of flexible use and arrangements.

The following phases of work are due to commence in Spring 2013, with a target completion date of Summer 2014.

The coming year for Duggan Morris Architects will offer a very different perspective for the practice with a raft projects across multiple sectors either commencing on site or currently under construction and due for completion during 2013. Of particular note, amongst others, includes a £5M new learning centre for the Maudsley Charity expected to complete in late spring; a 20,000sqft retail & commercial headquarters located in Shoreditch expected to complete in early summer; a 45 unit housing scheme fronting Brentford Lock, west of London Central, due for completion in October; and a refurbishment and extension of a 1950’s concrete frame office building for the Low Carbon Workplace in Wimbledon expected to complete before the year end.

Invited Competition - Argent/Aga Khan Foundation

Following an invitation from Argent and the Aga Khan Foundation Duggan Morris Architects have submitted a design for a canopy structure for the central crossing point in the Kings Cross development which will serve as an events space for the adjacent retail and cultural centre. The canopy is envisaged as an integral element within the public square to host modest scale events and activities. The scheme proposes Five table like forms stepping upwards from the surface of the square generating a subtle three dimensional cluster of objects. Engineered back to their most delicate and slender form, they are intended to sit in contrast to the heavy Victorian back drop of the linear coal drops and transit sheds. The proposal offers a constantly changing composition when viewed from alternating vantage points framing views both across and into the square with a unique and identifiable landmark anchoring the square and Cubitt Park within the wider masterplan. Each of the tables rests upon the other, ensuring that as few columns as possible touch the surface of the square. The variegated canopy tops generate a series of rooms which can be occupied in a number of ways, or all as one to accommodate modestly sized events. The design allows rainwater to cascade from one canopy top to the next feeding adjacent water features cut into the surface of the square.

Floating Cinema

The Floating Cinema project has reached an important milestone. Following extensive research a redundant barge was sourced at the end of 2012, in the Hoo Marina, off the River Medway, Kent. This riveted steel vessel is over 60 years old, and was used predominantly throughout London’s canal network, ferrying aggregates and construction materials in its 6ft deep hopper. The barge is over 70ft in length and a width of 12ft at its widest point. Detail design work is due to commence with the launch planned for late Spring.

Shortlist - Cadogan Pavilion

Following a rigorous selection procedure, Duggan Morris has submitted a project for a new free standing structure located along the eponymous Kings Road, Chelsea. The proposed pavilion offers an opportunity to programme on-going contemporary arts activities, projects and live events as part of the future life of the café; a discursive space that reveals the active relationships between architects, artists, collaborators and audiences, a place of ideas and exchange, of potential meetings and collisions.

Both the café pavilion and the square were conceived as a stage developed through critical dialogue with four artists, where works function within a permanent flux, of ‘appearance’ and ‘disappearance’, of ‘routine’ and ‘repetition’, of ‘reality’ and ‘illusion’; thus mimicking the process of contemporary art itself and the immediate context of the street, where London is ‘remade daily’.

European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award

Architecture Foundation Floating Cinema

Duggan Morris Architects have won the Open Architecture Competition to design the next phase of UP Projects' acclaimed Floating Cinema project. This project has been commissioned by the Legacy List with corporate partner Bloomberg as part of the Bloomberg East series of artist-led programmes to animate the waterways in East London working in partnership with the Canal and River Trust.

Our proposal was selected from a shortlist of four international practices, by a panel of seven judges including Lady Patty Hopkins (Hopkins Architects), Sarah Weir OBE (Legacy List), Sarah Ichioka (Architecture Foundation), Nina Pope (Somewhere), Karen Guthrie (Somewhere) and Emma Underhill (UP Projects).

Sarah Weir, Chief Executive, The Legacy List said: "We are extremely pleased to be able to commission the Floating Cinema in its next phase with this new boat by Duggan Morris Architects bringing the Extra-Ordinary dimension to the project. The artists and project team felt that Duggan Morris's proposal offered design solutions that embody the new 2013 programme theme of 'Extra-Ordinary', offering delight and playfulness as well as being robust and serviceable for a permanent lifespan on the water.

Stephen Lawrence Shortlist - Kings Grove

Kings Grove has been shortlisted for the Stephen Lawrence Price.

The RIBA Stephen Lawrence Prize is funded by the Marco Goldschmied Foundation, and was set up in memory of the teenager who was setting out on the road to becoming an architect when he was murdered in 1993. The prize, which rewards the best examples of projects that have a construction budget of less than £1 million, is intended to encourage fresh talent working with smaller budgets.

The winner will be announced at the RIBA Stirling Prize dinner on 13th October 2012.

Architecture Foundation Floating Cinema - Shortlist

Duggan Morris Architects have been selected as one of four competing practices to design a floating cinema for use in East London waters connecting the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Waltham Forest and Hackney with the new Olympic Park, intended to host a series of public events.

The project is being run by The Architecture Foundation and UP Projects and has been commissioned by The Legacy List and funded by Bloomberg as part of the Bloomberg East series of artist led programmes to animate the waterways in East London.

Contenders are collaborating with Floating Cinema lead artists Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie to generate a full design brief. The jury panel will announce the winner in September as part of The London Design Festival.

Pennyfathers Lane

Duggan Morris Architects have been selected through competitive interview to develop proposals to refurbish and extend a post war residential property on the outskirts of Welwyn Garden City. The property was designed and built in 1953 as a home to architects and researchers David Medd and Mary Crowley, two preeminent British architects who together helped advance the cause of a generation of well designed schools in the UK, during the post war austere period and beyond.

Both Mary and David resided in the home until the time of their deaths in 2005 and 2010 respectively. It is perhaps the enduring legacy of these two important figures in the history of post war architecture, as well as the original state of the house (largely as built in the 1950’s down to the design of the lamp shades) that the building was Grade II listed in 2007.

Planning Consent

Proposals by Duggan Morris Architects have been consented, to upgrade the exterior of a 1960's modernist house in Highgate, NW London. The house is set within a small cul-de-sac, the site of which previously housed a grand villa, known as Hillside Manor, dating back several hundred years.

The masterplan for the site, conceived in the 1960's, was designed by architect Leonard Michaels, famous for the publication 'Contemporary Structure in Architecture' of the 1950's. In his scheme, still evident today, six houses were arranged along a narrow road branching off FItzroy Park. Although each one unique, they all shared a common material scheme and volumentric clarity.

De Beauvoir Crescent

Works have topped out in the construction of two new housing blocks arranged along the Regent's Canal, Hackney. The scheme will create over 70 housing units for private, shared and affordable housing. The blocks are designed as fraternal twins, utilising brick facing throughout and articulated with ribbons of precast concrete positioned at each floor slab interval. The scheme is due for completion at the end of 2013.

Duggan Morris Architects have been selected through invited competition to develop proposals for the Tybalds Estate near Great Ormond Street, Camden. Working as a collaborative with MAE, and team with Avanti Architects and Camlins Landscape Architects, the project seeks to create a coherent site wide strategy, creating over 80 new homes, complete with a overhaul of the landscape spaces and public realm. The proposals consider a range of housing typologies for this complex site ranging from 2-3 bedroom mews houses, 1,2 and 3 bedroom flats and duplexes arranged in new build elements and a range of 'over builds' arranged across the site.

Mansel House - Commencement Due

Works are due to commence on the Low Carbon Workplace in Wimbledon. The project will convert a down at heal 1960's office building of roughly 12,000sqft, into 20,000swft of contemporary flexible office space. The project has just been awarded an 'Excellent' BREEAM rating and is proposed as an exemplar of its type. The scheme is being spearheaded by Stanhope, with Threadneedle and LCW. The project is expected to complete in late 2013.

SLaM - Under Construction

The citation of the London-South jury referred to the project as an 'exemplary response to the development of a landlocked site'. The jury also felt the house demonstrated 'a highly disciplined attention to detail in the design and the immaculate quality of the construction'.

Completion - The Network Building

The refurbishment of the office floors of The Network Building for client Derwent London is now complete. The project required an intelligent approach to the reorganisation and re-routing of a largely retained services infrastructure. Duggan Morris Architects has been Highly Commended in the World Architecture News (WAN) 21 for 21 Awards, an award intended to forecast the next generation of designers in the 21st century. 162 entries were received.

A longlist was composed by Jury Chairman, Peter Murray and WAN's Editor in Chief, Michael Hammond. The international jury consisted of Patrick Schumacher, Director at Zaha Hadid Architects, Andrew Best, Director at Buro Happold, Jack Carter, Associate at Renzo Piano Building Workshop as well as remote judges Craig Dykers, Director at Snøhetta, Reiulf Ramstad, Director at Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter and Julien De Smedt, Founder and Director of JDS Architects .

The panel, led by Peter Murray, founder of New London Architecture (NLA) and Director of the London Festival of Architecture, selected the practices that showed an outstanding ability to demonstrate their individual potential to be the next big thing in the architectural world. The jurors in particular were looking for architects whose directional ideas are helping to shape the future of architecture whilst keeping within the boundaries of commercial viability and sustainability.

Peter Murray concluded that it was ‘a very encouraging bunch, with a wide variety of approaches and it's a great privilege to assess them in this sort of way'.

Brentford Lock West

A reserved matters planning application for Brentford Lock West has been submitted to London Borough of Hounslow. The application covers a submission by three architectural practices (Duggan Morris Architects, Karakusevic Carson and Riches Hawley Mikhail) and landscape architects Camlins, for Phase 1 of a multi-phase development site.

The Duggan Morris Architects scheme consists of 45 residential units fronting onto the canalside and split over 2 plots. The buildings are conceived as cranked blocks following a meandering neighbourhood street held together by a large base plinth. The blocks are designed as a pair, both following a series of simple rules. The predominant building material is brick, whilst a subtle play with the details defines positions of windows and balconies.

The project was won through competition in September 2011.

Duggan Morris Architects, in collaboration with Ferrari S.p.A and Pipers have received an award for the best RIBA/Regent Street Window in the RIBA 2011 Regent Street Windows event for the London Festival of Architecture. The award was presented at a ceremony held at the Regent Street Association Annual Lunch at Sartoria on Wednesday 25 January 2012. The window display was based on the theme 'Cities of Tomorrow', where highly engineered Ferrari car parts were juxtaposed in architectural contexts alluding to future scenarios.

Works on the Croydon School Pavilions have completed at Virgo Fidelis and Westwood Language and Arts College for Girls. The projects were developed as a suite of buildings in reaction to a very tight programme and were funded by The Cooking Spaces Project - a fund set up to unite creativity with health and hygiene.

The project for Virgo Fidelis places a new freestanding multi-use pavilion within a clearing in an orchard, facilitating community events, creative enterprise and hospitality. The project at Westwood School, by contrast, is an extension to an existing dining and assembly area which is connected to an existing food catering space. The new building is elevated above the ground plane on stilts, and takes advantage of the magnificent views across the rolling landscape beyond. The area will also facilitate multiple uses, dining, seminars and will promote new healthy menus.

Planning Application - Richmond Adult Community College

Duggan Morris Architects has submitted a planning application for the new Arts and Education Wing to the Richmond Adult Community College campus (RACC). The commission was won through an invited competition in October 2011 and consists of a combination of new build and refurbishment components to introduce a new theatre, art and ceramics department, a reception area and a new central cloister as well as general teaching spaces. Further aspects include a proposed 'life skills' department, located within converted 1960's modernist local authority office building.

The site is located on the edge of a belt of Metropolitan Open Land (MOL) and situated within a local conservation area. The resultant scheme proposes a cluster of simple cubic forms of varying mass and height, wrapped in a softly textured brick skin and articulated with over sized picture windows and topped with metallic roof level lanterns. These new elements are intended to contrast the setting of the imposing original Edwardian school building which houses much of the general education space on the campus.

It is planned that the scheme is deliverable as a phased plan of works, to alleviate the impact and disruption of the scheme on the workings and viability of the site.

3A Hampstead Lane was awarded the Manser Medal at a ceremony held at the RIBA. The RIBA Manser Medal recognises outstanding one-off houses which demonstrate exceptional design.

The judges noted that 'the architects have ingeniously reconfigured the house to create flexible, multi-purpose rooms to suit changing lifestyles at the same time as restoring the detailing of the house back to its modernist roots. In Michael Manser's summation: this is truly a house of both its time and of the moment.'

A collaboration between Duggan Morris Architects, Karakusevic Carson and Riches Hawley Mikhail have won a competition to design canal-side housing in Brentford, West London for client ISIS, the development arm of British Waterways. The project named Brentford Lock West, is for Phase 1 of a multi-phase regeneration scheme to provide over 500 residential units, along with a variety of commercial and retail uses to re-invigorate an industrial site on the fringe of the town centre.

From the outset this collaboration of three small, emerging practices, has been working closely to develop a refined approach to the site masterplan, to achieve a genuinely share proposal, one where individual buildings can actively contribute to our wider aspirations for Brentford Lock West.

Duggan Morris Architects have commenced planning consultation with the London Borough of Merton to create 25,000sqft of contemporary office space delivered as part of the Low Carbon Workplace initiative, and in partnership with Threadneedle and Stanhope. The project requires the retention and substantial remodelling of a 1960's concrete and steel frame building located close to the centre of Wimbledon, and includes a number of light weight extensions and additions. A full planning application is due in August 2011.

Low Carbon Workplace works with companies to measure, reduce and certify their in-use office emissions. Through its exclusive partnership with Threadneedle Asset Management and Stanhope Plc, Low Carbon Workplace provides high quality low carbon office space tailored to individual companies' requirements and supports occupiers to minimise their emissions in-use through a package of occupier support.

The objectives of the 'scheme' and the 'trust' are simple; refurbish an outdated, down at heel, 1960's office building to create relevant and contemporary office space designed to meet exacting environmental standards developed in a holistic, simple and integrated manner. in this way, the building needs to reject 'clip on' solutions for those which favour a higher degree of integration such as insulation, draught-proofing and the use of healthy materials.

When creating energy efficient solutions for buildings, the quality of any architeecture should not be compromised by the inclusion of environmental systesm. Thus, an approach to incorporate 'Passive Systems' is to be promoted, including such things as;

-Air tightness

- High performance insulation

- Passive ventilation

- Natual Light and thermal mass

- Energy efficient artificial lighting solutions

- Smart metering equipment

New Learning Centre

Duggan Morris Architects has submitted a planning application for a New Learning Centre, on the Maudsley Hospital Campus of the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, on Denmark Hill. The client, SLaM NHS Trust Charitable Funds, is a charitable foundation which invests in projects to support world class mental health and well being, support, training and development. The project has been informed and developed through an 18 month immersion process involving research and building visits as well as extensive consultation with SLaM user groups, Kings College Hospital, the Institute of Psychiatry and community groups, with DMA commissioned to develop the client’s brief which was summarized through a series of ‘Vision Statements’.

The new 1,550sqm building will house teaching and learning facilities, cafe, exhibition and ancillary spaces. The central focus of this unique project, coined ‘Project Learning Potential’, is to create a totally immersive learning environment through networking, social media and Wi-Fi technologies such that each individual user can tune the learning process to his/her needs to obtain the maximum results.

A key vision for the new building is to destigmatise preconceptions of mental health and well being, by making it more accessible to the wider community, sharing with the campus a vision which includes doctors, nurses, teachers, service users and carers in promoting an integrated learning environment; ‘learning for anyone, anywhere, anytime’.

Duggan Morris Architects projects at 3A Hampstead Lane and 1 Maple Place/12 Fitzroy Street both received coveted RIBA Awards, at a ceremony at the V&A on 19th May 2011.

3A Hampstead Lane is a renovation of a 1950's Brutalist building for an Architect client in Highgate Village, whilst the project at 1 Maple Place/12 Fitzroy Street is a sensitive refurbishment of two conjoined office buildings for Developer Derwent London.

3A Hampstead Lane was also shortlisted for the RIBA London & English Heritage Award for Sustaining the Historic Environment. Our client Derwent London received a special commendation for RIBA London & Design for London Client of the Year Award.

The Cooking Spaces Project

Duggan Morris Architects has obtained planning permission to develop proposals for of a number of secondary schools in Croydon.

The Cooking Spaces Project is part of a wider government focus to promote health and well-being and to expand the experience of cooking beyond the Key Stage 3 statutory requirements.The programme is looking to encourage a ‘seed to plate’ approach to the teaching curriculum. Allotments are encouraged as well as links to food hospitality. As such the projects are looking towards Hospitality Diplomas, BTEC catering and IBCAS enterprising programmes. The projects have very strict budgets and all funds must be expended by September 2011.

The construction works need to impact as little as possible on the day to day activities. As such the solution was to find construction technologies which involve minimum time on site using fast track assembly systems and dry construction methods. Each school is simple in form constructed from metal structurally insulated panels and a metal profile deck roof forming the enclosure; a system commonly used to construct cold stores. Each building is then wrapped in a simple decorative mesh.

The projects are due to commence construction in May.

Regent Street Shopfronts

RIBA London is coordinating a series of window installation projects with the Regent Street Association and media partner ELLE Decoration. Duggan Morris Architects are collaborating with Ferrari S.p.A and Pipers to develop a window display focusing on the theme 'Cities of Tomorrow'.

The concept is to take components of the Ferrari engine and display them as a ‘city fragment’ out of scale with its actual purpose, encouraging a different reading of the object. A variety of scenarios are proposed from a city landscape connected by a large circulatory device to a manufacturing plant.

The juxtaposition of buildings with highly engineered components will aim to speculate on the future of architecture and the diversity high precision engineering brings to it, speculating on solutions to population density, energy manufacture and public realm.

De Beauvoir Cresent

Duggan Morris Architects are currently engaged in the detailed design of two new mixed used buildings located in De Beauvoir Crescent, Hackney, sharing a key vantage point along the Regent’s Canal. The scheme will provide over 76 residential units accommodating private, shared and affordable housing. In detail, the buildings are seen as fraternal, sharing a single palette but developed to express internal typologies and structural idiosyncrasies. Pre-Planning Application - New Learning Centre

Designs for a world class new learning centre, on the campus of the South London and Maudsley campus have been submitted to Southwark as part of the pre-application consultation process.

DMA has been engaged on this project for over a year and half, with an extensive programme of consultation to community members and action groups, end users, facility managers, IT specialists and members of the Charitable Trust for SLaM.

The scheme, still in it's infancy, is being developed as a rigorously planned free standing volume. The external skin is being designed to be highly articulated with carefully detailed windows following a repeat module.

Landscaping throughout will complete the project, to meet the highest standards of environmental performance, but at the same time meet the demands of international mental health professors and lecturers as well as members of the local community.

A full planning application is due in March 2011, with construction due to commence in October of the same year.

Completion - Fitzroy Street

The project contains bespoke signage, wayfinding and lighting all designed by Duggan Morris Architects.

Frobisher House won the award for the Best Housing Development for 1 to 5 units at the The Brick Award ceremony held at The Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel, London held on Wednesday 3rd November.

The Awards recognise excellence in design and construction using brick from 100's of entries submitted each year.

The judges liked the straight-forward response to a tight urban site, commenting that the house is full of invention with a challenging exterior and an interesting internal spatial arrangement.

Duggan Morris Architects has won planning permission for a mixed use development in South East London. The 20,000sqm project contains 200 residential units, 11 commercial units and a large mixed-use café and cycle storage pavilion.

The scheme will create new cycle and pedestrian routes through the existing railway arches on the western fringe of the plot and open up the development to the surrounding area.

Finished in a range of bricks, the project ranges in height from 1 to 12 storeys and features both one and three-bedroom flats as well as larger four bedroom houses.

A phased construction programme is forecast to commence in 2011.

Duggan Morris Architects has submitted proposals to Lewisham Planning authority for a mixed use regeneration scheme for an industrial site in Deptford. The scheme encompases 170 residential units and 20,000sqft of commercial space. The scheme is conceived as a series of tributary blocks which encourage movement via the historic canal route and between Deptford Park and Folkstone Gardens. A raised podium provides public and private gardens. The units are arranged within a rigorous brick lattice structure, with the design of the window and balcony configurations replicated per unit type.

Completion - Hampstead Lane

Works have completed for the renovation of a modernist building, located in the heart of Highgate. Built in the 1960's as a self build project by an academic architect couple, the project has focussed on understanding the original design intent through extensive research of historic documents, photographs and original construction drawings, thus introducing sensitive interventions. The building is designed as a series of interconnecting rectangular volumes framing a rear landscape of newly planted mature silver birches accessed through a fully glazed rear facade. Completion - Kings Grove

Works to Kings Grove, a new build house in the heart of Peckham have completed. The project places a simple two storey brick structure onto a backland site, adjoined by the rear gardens of ten neighbouring properties. Yew Tree Lodge, a sheltered housing scheme located in Hillingdon, NW London has received an RIBA regional Award. The RIBA awards form, arguably, the most rigorously judged awards programme in the world, with every one of the 400 plus entries visited. RIBA Awards are given for buildings that have high architectural standards and make a substantial contribution to the local environment, and have been running continuously since 1966.

New Commission - New Learning Centre

Duggan Morris Architects have been commissioned to design a new learning centre on the site of the South London and Maudsley Hospital, Denmark Hill. The appointment has been preceded by an extensive immersion programme which involved developing vision statements in conjunction with key stakeholders. This immersion process has culminated in the development of a detailed briefing programme for the new building intended to place SLaM on the global stage. The design will progress to a planning application in late 2010.

New Commission - Bexhill-on-Sea

Duggan Morris Architects has been commissioned by Rother District Council to design a £220,000 scheme for a series of new seafront structures for the East Sussex resort of Bexhill-on-Sea, following a hard fought RIBA competition attracting 148 entries. The final judging process took place over a two day period in the De La Warr Pavilion, and was believed to have gone to the wire.

The scheme will be the flagship element of the Council's Next Wave Seafront Improvement Project, a wider £5 million cultural regeneration programme that has received £1 million of funding from CABE under the SeaChange Programme. A CABE spokesperson said 'Duggan Morris's strong and sophisticated approach reflects the ambition and desire for innovation of both Bexhill and the Sea Change programme. We are confident that this scheme will be an enduring and creative addition to Bexhill's seafront, complementing the De La Warr Pavilion, and adding to the resort's impressive architectural identity.'

Completion - Clifton Hill

Works to Clifton Hill have been completed. A new solid staircase is the key new intervention in the building. The stair is conceived as a coiled timber shaving, a continuous looping form connecting five levels of a substantial Victorian villa in St John's Wood. The project also features a new basement level, extensive landscaping to the front and rear and a full renovation of the building facades.

Yew Tree Lodge has received 3 industry awards including a CABE ‘Building for Life silver Standard’, Building Better Healthcare Awards 2009 - Best Residential Care Design, British Homes Award 2009 - Affordable Housing Development of the Year. Planning approval has been secured for a new swimming pool and gym facility at a special needs school in Buckinghamshire. The scheme sits on the edge of a green belt, and was voted for unanimously at committee. Duggan Morris Architects have been instructed to develop the scheme to construction stage, with site commencement forecast in 2010.
